Previously, Ben founded and led Deans for Impact, a US-based nonprofit organization that works to improve initial teacher education using cognitive science. As Ben says, he likes to get people thinking, about thinking! This ep goes much wider in scope than usual. But I feel that's fitting given the unique point we're currently at in global politics. ERRR #093. Adam Boxer on the First 10 Minutes of a Lesson
ERRR #093. Adam Boxer on the First 10 Minutes of a Lesson
Adam Boxer is a chemistry teacher in North London, he writes about science education, cognitive science, evidence-based education, and many other important topics. He’s an extremely popular on teacher social media and has had a huge impact on education both locally and internationally through his writings, books, podcast, and talks.  I’ve followed Adam for a long time and have always found his writing to be extremely logical, practical, and well thought out. His book, Teaching Secondary Science, is a must-have for anyone who is keen for a great overview of a structured and systematic approach to teaching high school science, and I can highly recommend Adam’s other outputs too.  This podcast was prompted when I recently explored a fantastic bit of edtech initiated by Adam, Carousel, which is an excellent knowledge management platform to help students to learn and master key knowledge that is fundamental to their success. Off the back of that, I was really keen to get Adam onto the podcast to discuss how he uses the first 10 minutes of a lesson to embed such knowledge… and I’m so glad I did! I hope you love it too See full show notes at www.ollielovell.com/adamboxer

ERRR #088. Kristian Still on Test-enhanced Learning
ERRR #088. Kristian Still on Test-enhanced Learning
Ollie Lovell · ERRR088. Kristian Still on Test-enhanced Learning Kristian Still is a deputy head academic with over 20 years’ experience as a head teacher and senior leader. Kristian has a keen interest in education leadership, evidence-informed practice, and ed tech and has done a phenomenal job of combining the evidence on topics such as retrieval, spaced practice, interleaving, and successive relearning in his excellent book test-enhanced learning, a practical guide to improving academic outcomes for all students.  This is an absolute ion area for me, and especially the idea of empowering students to take charge of their own learning through retrieval practice that can be used as a way to boost their metacognition around the security of their own knowledge, and use that to direct their future learning.  For me, learning how to personally do this has unlocked learning in a way that’s been the foundation for much of the work I’ve done such as building the knowledge to run this podcast, collecting ideas to write my books, speaking foreign languages, and even ing peoples names.  I’m hopeful that this podcast will move our profession a little closer to a better harnessing of the power of the power of desirable difficulties, like retrieval, spacing, and successive re-learning, to our students’ achievement To get a summary of this episode, sign up at www.patreon.com/errr   The ERRR podcast can also be listened to on Spotify, apple podcasts, and all other podcasting apps.  Links/resources mentioned in the show Kristian's Book, Test-enhanced learning Kristian's website, More Ollie's Books, Cognitive Load Theory in Action and Tools for Teachers To get a summary of this episode, sign up at www.patreon.com/errr  This episode of the ERRR Podcast is brought to you by John Catt Educational This episode of the ERRR podcast is brought to you by Catalyst. ERRR #087. Arran Hamilton and Dylan Wiliam on Making Room for Impact (De-implementation)
ERRR #087. Arran Hamilton and Dylan Wiliam on Making Room for Impact (De-implementation)
Ollie Lovell · ERRR087 Arran Hamilton and Dylan Wiliam on Making Room for Impact (De-implementation) Arran Hamilton is group director of Education at Cognition Learning Group. Previously he has held senior positions at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the Education Development Trust, the British Council, and a research fellowship at Warwick University. His core focus is on translating evidence into impact at scale. He has overseen the design, delivery, and evaluation of large scale education improvement programs across the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, East Asia, and the Middle East.  Dylan Wiliam needs no introduction but I’m going to give him one anyway. Dylan is emeritus professor of Educational Assessment at the Universith College London Institute of Education. He started his career teaching in inner-city London schools before transi- tioning to educational research. He was dean of the School of Education at King’s College London, senior research director at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, US, and deputy director of the Institute of Education, University of London. Dylan is particularly well known for his work on Formative Assessment and I’m delighted to say that this is Dylan’s second appearance on the ERRR podcast, and it’s just as good as the first which was a particularly popular episode.  In this episode of the ERRR podcast we’re discussing Arran Hamilton, John Hattie, and Dylan Wiliam’s new book: Making Room for Impact – A De-implementation guide for educators.  Often in education we talk about which programs, initiatives, or practices we should be incorporating into our practice, but rarely do we talk about what we need to give up to make space for those new practices. Even more rarely do we consider structured approaches to work out what to de-implement, how to do it, and how to measure success. But luckily, today is just one of those rare occasions.  I was super impressed by the clarity and structure of the book, Making Room for Impact, and there were many, many fantastic tips and frameworks within that anyone interested in structured de-implementation will find supremely helpful. Further, this was just an awesome discussion with Arran and Dylan, two super smart guys who have thought deeply about education. I hope you love this episode! ERRR #086. Gwyn Ap Harri on Building, Breaking, and Fixing a World Famous School
Ollie Lovell · ERRR #086. Gwyn Ap Harri on Building, Breaking, and Fixing a World Famous School This episode we’re speaking with Gwyn Ap Harri. Gwyn is the CEO of XP School Trust, a group of schools in the UK designed to its students to express who they are through their work. Gwyn is also the CEO of realsmart, an edtech company that empowers s to learn more and learn it faster. I first came across the work of XP via their youtube film, Above All, Comion, I’ve linked to this in the Shownotes and, if you haven’t watched it already, I highly recommend it. Following that, I visited XP, Twice, in 2022, because I couldn’t get enough. I was blown away by a number of things, but particularly by how students could talk about their project work, and about the conscious approach to building crew and strong relationships between students and teachers.  This is my second ERRR podcast discussion with Gwyn. Listen to our first here. But this episode of the ERRR podcasts is a little different. In this episode, Gwyn shares some of the challenges that XP has faced in the process of ‘scaling up’, and talks us through how he and the XP team are going about overcoming those challenges.  This episode is a pretty unique opportunity to hear from a school leader, bearing all, and honestly sharing the challenges of running a school, and a trust of schools, and how we can think about putting in place systems and, crucially, principles, to avoid similar challenges in future.  I’m extremely grateful for Gwyn coming on, and for his courage in willing to share at this sensitive time in XP’s development.  To get a summary of this episode, sign up at www.patreon.com/errr   The ERRR podcast can also be listened to on Spotify, apple podcasts, and all other podcasting apps.  Links/resources mentioned in the show ERRR #070. ERRR #085. Jeff Robin on Teaching Like an Artist
Ollie Lovell · ERRR085 Jeff Robin on Teaching Like an Artist This episode we're speaking with Jeff Robin. Jeff is a teacher of 27 years and is a founding faculty member of High Tech High in San Diego and remained an active collaborative teacher at High Tech High until 2017.  In this episode, we discuss Jeff’s fantastic book, Teach Like an Artist, in which he outlines a vast collection of the art projects that he coordinated at High Tech High, the wonderful work of his students, and what he learnt about how to be an art teacher, and a teacher more broadly, through this rich experience.  I was initially put in touch with Jeff following my discussion with Gwyn Ap Harri of XP school, back in episode 70, as Gwyn and Jeff are great friends and similarly driven about creating fantastic learning experiences for students. Jeff sent me his book and I was blown away by the quality of the work that his students had done, and the ion and impact of Jeff’s teaching.  This is a wide ranging discussion touching on everything from effective instruction, models and chunking of tasks, what it takes to run effective projects, field trips and excursions, the role of high art in schools, teacher collaboration, and much more. ERRR #084. Sarah Cottingham on Ausubel’s Meaningful Learning
Ollie Lovell · ERRR084. Sarah Cottingham on Ausubel's Meaningful Learning This episode we’re speaking with Sarah Cottingham. Sarah is a former teacher and experienced teacher educator. She has an MA in Educational Neuroscience and translates research on memory and learning into potential practical implications for teachers. She also works with schools and organisations on how to train staff most effectively. Sarah is the author of ‘Ausubel's Meaningful Learning in Action‘ which accessibly explains Ausubel's powerful learning theory and how to harness its benefits to learning, and is the topic of today’s conversation. I think that this will be one of the more impactful episodes of the ERRR podcast for many listeners because it really gets to the heart of our day to day task by asking the fundamental question, ‘What is learning and how does it happen?’ Sarah has done a phenomenal amount of work deconstructing the dense prose and complex terminology of David Ausubel and making it accessible to mere mortals like us. There is an absolute shedload of wisdom packed in to this episode and I’m very, very confident that you’re going to love listening to it as much as I loved this conversation!
